Dr. Stephanie B.R. Rothman is a social psychologist and teaches courses such as introductory psychology, social psychology, research methods, close relationships, and skills in psychology. She also teaches an honors course on the self, combining her research interests and social psychology knowledge with her interest in philosophy and science fiction novels.

Rothman has an active research lab, broadly focused in the areas of the self-concept, social rejection and relationships. More specifically, she is interested in the clarity and stability of the self-concept; how do people form their identities and what types of situations might lead them to expand or modify their sense of who they are? Additionally, she studies the positive and negative consequences of relationships; what beneficial effects do others have on us and what happens when the need to belong is thwarted?

She also co-leads a study abroad program with Dr. Ellen Posman. In this program, students take a course at BW which combines aspects of psychology and religion across cultures, and then spend 16 days exploring Japan. The trip includes visits to Tokyo, Mt. Fuji, Kyoto, Nara and Hiroshima.
